How F1 Qualifying Works in 2026
Grand Prix Qualifying sets the provisional starting order for the race. With 22 cars on the 2026 grid, six drivers are eliminated in Q1 and another six in Q2, leaving ten drivers to fight for pole position in Q3.
Q1 · 18 minutes
All 22 drivers can run. The six slowest are eliminated and normally fill positions 17–22 in the qualifying classification.
Q2 · 15 minutes
The remaining 16 drivers return with their Q1 times cleared. The six slowest are eliminated, leaving the top ten.
Q3 · 12 minutes
Ten drivers fight for the front of the grid. The fastest Q3 lap earns pole position before any grid penalties are applied.
How to read F1 qualifying results
A blank Q2 or Q3 column means the driver was eliminated earlier. Compare each driver’s best time in the last segment they reached.
Qualifying versus Sprint Qualifying
Grand Prix Qualifying sets the Sunday race grid. Sprint Qualifying uses SQ1, SQ2 and SQ3 to set only the separate Sprint grid.
When is F1 qualifying?
It usually runs Saturday, but some events use different days. The schedule above shows the published start converted to your timezone.
