How the 2026 F1 Sprint Format Works
A Sprint weekend replaces two practice sessions with competitive action. FP1 and Sprint Qualifying run Friday, the Sprint and Grand Prix Qualifying run Saturday, and the full Grand Prix remains on Sunday.
Friday: FP1 and Sprint Qualifying
Teams get one practice session before SQ1, SQ2 and SQ3 decide the Sprint starting grid.
Saturday: Sprint and Qualifying
The short race comes first. Separate Grand Prix Qualifying later sets the grid for Sunday.
Sprint distance
The Sprint is approximately 100 km and is designed to run for about half an hour, with no mandatory pit stop.
Sprint points
The top eight score: P1 gets 8 points, then 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point for P8.
Sprint Qualifying: SQ1, SQ2 and SQ3
SQ1 lasts 12 minutes, SQ2 lasts 10 minutes and SQ3 lasts 8 minutes. Six drivers are eliminated after SQ1 and six more after SQ2 on the 22-car grid.
Does the Sprint set the Grand Prix grid?
No. The Sprint has its own grid and points. Saturday’s separate Grand Prix Qualifying determines the provisional starting order for Sunday’s race.
